Fat Mary Bike Tour

When:  January 25 to February 8, 2025.

A fully-supported 15-day tour of Western Cuba offering a broad view of Cuban life.

Powered by the typically easterly tailwinds and supported by a tour crew and an air-conditioned bus you will ride from Matanzas through Havana and on to the western tip of Cuba where we arrive at the internationally famous dive centre known as María la Gorda the tour's namesake.

Walk the streets of Havana and take a vintage car ride to enjoy its history, culture, shopping and food.

Wander the ruins of a coffee plantation from days when wealthy Haitian French made large investments in coffee production around 1800.  Join a local guide as we explore the spectacular Soroa orchid garden beside our hotel. This orchid garden contains an immense collection of 18,000 orchids from all over the world, maintained in the unique microclimate of Soroa.

Cycle to San Diego de los Baños in the foothills of the Sierra de los Organos. San Diego de los Baños was made famous for its hot mineral springs believed to have medicinal properties, along the Caiguanabo River.  Consider taking a hot spring bath and receive a certificate for your treatment.

During our stay at a mountain camp in Mil Cumbres we will eat the best of Cuban country-style food cooked over a wood-burning fire mingling with wonderful local country people

Marvel at the Cueva de los Portales where Ché Guevara established his hidden headquarters during the Cold War.  Nearby, we visit the local yet internationally renowned artist Miguel Antonio Remedios and stay for a fabulous cup of espresso.  Many riders have purchased his artwork during this visit.

Cycle through the Sierra del Rosario Biosphere. Wake up in the Valle Viñales and enjoy breakfast surrounded by the Sierra de los Órganos mountain range. The area is known for its dramatic formations known as mogotes towering over the landscape. The mogotes – large, rounded mountains – are all that’s left of a limestone plateau that existed here 160 million years ago.

We will enjoy the day swimming and hanging out at the beautiful beach called María la Gorda.  Previous tour riders have recommended we add a day here, so we have done just that.  There is a beautiful coral reef for snorkelling just offshore, and a chance that we can rent a dive boat to snorkel or dive farther offshore.  At the end of the day, we will have dinner and watch the sunset over the ocean.

Finally, we will use our tour bus to drive to Varadero where we will wind down at the exceptional whites sand beaches of this tourist mecca.  On our last night together we will have a farewell dinner at the Xanadú Mansion, formerly the Dupont family cottage.
