Lee's Cuba Bike Tour Newsletter - Autumn 2023

Book your Cuba Bike Tour Today

Beth and I have two tour offerings this year.  Spaces are filling up but we have more spots and would love to have full buses of friends to help support the Cuban people.  Our tours provide jobs for Cubans, support provincial youth cycling clubs across Cuba with donations that our clients bring, and recently we have been encouraging people to bring medicine which is in short supply.  Despite the hardship Cubans are experiencing, tourists can count on a great experience this winter.

Exploring the Western United States this fall

The tour company Bicycle Breeze will support you from arrival to departure with a team including your tour leaders (Lee and Beth), a Cuban cultural tour guide, a bike mechanic, a bus driver, and a logistics team in Havana.

Registration is now open and encouraged.  You can register without obligation and with no deposit.  Registering helps us plan - and is much appreciated.  Deposits will be requested by the tour company in late fall to firm up our plan, and then full payment will be due 60 days prior to the tour.  Details and links are below where we describe the tours.

Beth and Lee will be returning in 2024 for two of their favourite tour routes both in eastern Cuba, "Guantanamo Mango" and "Celia Sanchez."  Details and links are below where we describe the tours.

We have been travelling around North America in our recently purchased travel trailer this fall.  It has been a lot of fun and similar to our Cuba adventures in that we are covering a lot of distance, seeing sights off the beaten path, and engaging in the local culture.  We find every new place overwhelmingly interesting and even small things like finding a National Monument off a highway can absorb our attention for hours.

If you share our joy from travel and (safe) adventure, you should try one of our Cuba Tours.

Below are a few photos from our trip to visit our daughters' family in Boulder Colorado which took us across the northern States, down the front range, and back across the southern States.

Cuba is Ready to Greet you

"Cuba-Normal" is how I would describe Cuba right now.  It is ready to greet you with open arms, affection, good food, sunny beaches, safety, and quiet roads.  We can anticipate that there will sometimes be fewer options at meals than we get at home, but that's just the way it always is.  They say "Cuba es", meaning that's just how it is in Cuba.

Below are summaries of our two tours for the upcoming winter.  We hope you can join us.

First 2024 Tour - Guantánamo Mango

This tour will run from January 27 to February 10, 2024.  The ride is through the part of Cuba called the Oriente, known for its rural towns, cocoa plantations, hidden beaches, pine forests and amazing scenery.

For more details and to register for this tour head to the website with the link below.  Registration is free and holds a spot for you until we confirm the tour in the fall and require bookings with a deposit. Guantanamo Mango Tour Website

Second 2024 Tour - Celia Sánchez

This tour will run from February 17 to March 2, 2024.  This tour celebrates the life and accomplishments of Celia Sanchez who helped lay the foundation for the revolution and supported Fidel's troops throughout including living at the rebel base high in the Sierra Maestra mountains.  We will travel in her footsteps and explore the area around the Sierra Maestra.

What’s Happening in Cuba Right Now?

Cuba depends on tourism to obtain hard currency from developed countries to buy food for its people on the world market.  Unbelievably, Cuba must import 80% of its food.  Our tours also support Cuban youth cyclists as we along with our clients bring thousands of dollars of cycling equipment to the school programs in each province of the country, along with medicine and clothing.

Cuba is a safe destination for travel, with good roads, and excellent Covid safety as 92% of Cubans over the age of two are fully vaccinated.

Food for tourists has been readily available and meals at restaurants, hotels, and casas particulares (Cuban B&Bs) have been simple but tasty.  We wish it was easier for Cubans to obtain their own groceries in the abundance we enjoy outside this small island nation.  More tourists are the biggest opportunity to help Cuba financially.

We expect 2024 will be the year of the US Dollar in Cuba.  The government recently passed a law to enable Cubans to deposit US Dollars in their bank accounts, which had been the barrier to the dollarization of the economy.

We prepared a full and current explanation of travelling tips to Cuba and it is available here.

Final Words

Thanks for reading our blog!  If you have any questions, reach out to us and we can review the options with you.  We can also send you a brochure of any tour with daily itineraries and photos.

Best wishes,

Lee & Beth Orphan
